Time. Tradition. And no other tourists, in the heart of the heart of the Douro Valley and home of the extremely beautiful and prestigious Quinta do Noval.
Registered as a vineyard in 1715 with over 300 years of winemaking, here, tradition rules. And relationships count. You and yours are the special – and only – guests of Quinta do Noval’s working family, its massive sky, and verdant grape terraces.
Quinta do Noval is where the Douro Valley physical and cultural terroirs meet. This unique piece of earth, combined with generations of human devotion and infused with today’s innovation, results in some of the world’s greatest ports and truly exceptional wines.
You’ll tour the vineyard, walking along Quinta do Noval’s distinctive “socalcos” (stone terraces) where labourers shouldering boxes of juice-laden fruit never miss a step. You’ll have tastings next to the winery where all grapes are still foot-trodden in ancient granite “lagares” (troughs).
An aperitif on the terrace under the ancient cedar tree toasts a stunning view before a leisurely lunch in the quintessentially English-feeling dining room. Daily armfuls of fresh (and organic) vegetables from the estate plots and homemade tarts and jams from the Quinta’s copious fruit trees are served.
Afterward: a post-coffee stroll, photos in the centuries-old house, a snooze in the drawing room…lots to do slowly.
Our afternoon takes you to Miradouro de Casal de Loivos above the picturesque village of Pinhão for breathtaking views -BBC London says it’s one of the most beautiful spots in the world. And James’ secret short walk through vineyards with olive and orange trees is a perfect end as the day cools, often with fantastic light.
An exceptionally beautiful return drive to Porto completes your personal Douro tour.
What an achievement! In September 2018, a Quinta do Noval vintage port was the highest-selling lot at a Sotheby`s sale, with a staggering £45,980 for a case of 1963 Nacional.
