When to visit

The Douro has lots of sunshine from March until early December, so there is a good chance your visit will be warm and sunny. The winter can be wet and the summer extremely hot, so for this reason we do not operate tours between mid-December and early March or during July and August. In the spring and autumn, you will enjoy the best weather while avoiding the high-season crowds.

Spring in the Douro often arrives early and in March it is possible to picnic in the vineyards or beneath the pink and white almond blossom. April and May are lovely months with a profusion of flowers of every colour among the bright green vines. In June the grapes begin to swell under the sun's caressing warmth.

Autumn By September the great summer heat is usually over. Grape harvesting begins and lasts for several joyful weeks. If you are lucky, you will participate in treading the grapes, a centuries-old tradition. In late October the vine leaves take on warm tones of red, orange and yellow. The year ends with the olive harvest in December.
